What is Kathak?
Kathak is a Major classical dance form of India. The word comes from a Sanskrit word “Kathakar”, which means a storyteller. Patronized by art loving medieval rulers, Kathak artists worked at refining its dramatic and rhythmic aspects delighting elite audiences. Kathak combines the spiritual fervor of Hindu temple with opulent Mughal and Rajput courts. Jaipur, Benaras and Lucknow are the 3 main schools or gharanas of Kathak.
The technique of Kathak is characterized by rhythmic footwork set to complex time cycles. The dance movements include numerous pirouettes executed at lightning speed and ending in statuesque poses time cycles. There is also storytelling from epic scriptures, devotional compositions and romantic poetry using subtle gestures and expressions.
The dance is performed by both men and women. The dancer has the freedom to his or her skill and style of dancing. The dancer and percussionist often indulge in virtuoso display of rhythmic wizardry, enchanting audiences from any background and culture. Enriched by contemporary literature, music and performance practice, Kathak responds to an increasingly global culture.
